Pontyclun Match Report

We were under the lights again for a big Friday night fixture against Pontyclun. We’d seen them play at our festival and knew they were a decent side. So we knew we were in for a stern test.

Tom lost the toss (again!) and they elected to kick off. We wasted no time in attack and Evan window made a lovely break to get us deep into their half. We worked hard and stayed there for most of the first half. Pontyclun defended well and we had to work hard to keep the pressure on, which we did for the entirety of the first half.

Frustratingly, we gave away a lot of penalties with our aggressiveness at the breakdown and this was reflected in the score line. We created lots of opportunities deep in their half but their defence was resolute and they conceded just two tries in that period.

We went into the sheds at 10-0 and we told the boys the importance of keeping up the intensity and scoring first in the second half.

The boys obliged and put Pontyclun under a load of pressure;but to their absolute credit, Pontyclun just wouldn’t give up.

The conditions weren’t great for running rugby but we decided to ignore them and ran it anyway. From deep in our own half, Jordy, who was a complete thorn in their side all night, managed to turn over the ball. The forwards moved through a couple of phases and the backs spread the ball wide to Ellis Bennett who ran 60m to score arguably the best try of the evening.

Sam kept the scoreboard ticking over by slitting the conversation and we were back to receive the kick off. We worked our way back up the field and got the ball in their 22. Sam had a lovely individual run and scored under the sticks before slotting another conversation.

The game ended 31-0 (I think) and the boy’s thoroughly deserved the win. Pontyclun were a very decent outfit though and we had to work really hard for the result.

We were immensely proud of the boys tonight as they’d done everything we’d asked and more. There are almost too many players to mention as they all played well, however, Sam, H, Jordy, Rio, Iestyn and Ellis did particularly well.

See you in training on Tuesday.
